SCOTT’S HUT, ANTARCTICA A talk by Charley Brentnall Thursday 15th March 2012, 7.00 pm
At the end of the 19th century more was known about the face of Mars than the continent of Antarctica. Then in the period of 1898 to 1917 the race for the pole, fame and country was played out. The names Amundsen, Scott, Shackleton and Borchgrevink became immortalised in a place of extraordinary beauty and silence. They built huts to launch their expeditions and as havens from the extreme climate: often leaving in a hurry.
100 years ago, Robert Falcon Scott and his men were hoping against all odds of returning home. Their stores, equipment, clothing and personal effects lie in witness to the stories of tough men, deprivation, hardship, starvation, and unbelievable strength of minds - or madness. These iconic timber buildings and frozen history, now threatened with climate change, are being rescued from the edge of extinction.
Charley Brentnall, a U.K. timber specialist, spent three seasons “on the ice” with the Antarctic Heritage Trust at Capes Royds and Evans. He will outline the history of the Ross Sea “Heroic Era” huts and describe the conservation works being undertaken.
Bar open from 7.00 pm – the talk will begin at 7.45 pm prompt. Come along for a mulled cider with friends. Profits to the Antarctic Heritage Trust
Tickets available at £5.00 from: Laetitia Crutchley 01308 485332 or collect from: The Marquis of Lorne, Nettlecombe or Three Horseshoes Inn, Powerstock.
