Short Mat Bowls
We would love you to join us for a relaxing evening of fun, banter, and a game or three of Bowls.
We play on the first and third Wednesdays from September to April. Newcomers are welcome to come and have a go!
Our first meeting this autumn will be 6th October at 8pm. All our existing players think they will be very rusty, so new novices would be very welcome, and any lack of experience will not be noticed! The following meeting will be on 20th October. Both meetings are expected to finish at around 9.45pm after refreshments.
Other dates are published on the Availability page of this web site, or in Eggardon and Colmers View, and can be confirmed by telephoning one of the committee. For more details contact Jane White 485237 or Helen or Bruce Lack on 485441.
SHORT MAT BOWLS - THOUGHTS FROM A BEGINNER
Most sports require participation at a reasonably early age, together with dedication, training, competitiveness and even talent. Not so short mat bowls - or so I thought after my first time at Powerstock Hut. Welcomed and given friendly guidance by the regulars - there are about a dozen - I found it ridiculously easy to roll a weighted bowl some fifteen feet or so along a mat as near as possible to a target ball. I made a few mistakes of course, but so did most of the others. I felt proud and encouraged by praise for my first efforts. It was therefore a shock when on my second and most recent visit I made a complete hash of things. I bowled too long, too short, and even once into the match on an adjoining mat. It was particularly humiliating as I had drawn a peg that made me team leader. Even so my team won: eight points scored by my partner Annabelle Jackman and one by me. Don’t worry, this often happens, I was assured as I gratefully accepted close of play refreshments and listened to non-malicious gossip. In fact it was a fun evening and one that more of us should enjoy. What better way to spend an evening with neighbours and make new friends. The exercise is good for you, but not overtiring. You can experience exhilaration, frustration, humiliation and triumph almost at the same time. Surely this is preferable to staying home watching TV: in the unlikely event that The Bill is your favourite programme, you can always record it. A warm welcome awaits new bowlers, with or without experience. Why not have a word with Jane White (485237) about joining us?
